The legend that inspired the painting:
“The monster that has the eyes on the muzzle” or “The Beast of Teixeira” (Covilhã)
The beast of Teixeira had huge corpulence and cunning. Every week it visited the village, always at night. As soon as it found some dupes, the beast, who had its eyes on the tip of the muzzle to be able to pick up men easily, it ate them. When someone approached with the intention of helping the victim, payed his good will with the loss of his life. Each week a man disappeared, without knowing how. The villagers were in a panic because of the hideous beast. When night came, all the doors and windows of the houses were closed. One night in which the beast could not find anyone on the streets, entered a house, seeing light inside. It is said that it get stuck in the fireplace, dying this way. Now, only remains the legend.
